Tuesday’s 8-0 win at the Proact had hat-tricks for both Kristian Dennis and Ricky German, but perhaps more important for the Spireites was the second half introduction of Spanish midfielder Martinez.

And there was more good news in the form of Conor Wilkinson, the on-loan Bolton striker also making a return from a knee injury.

The emphatic victory put Chesterfield into the quarter-finals of the competition, where they will host near neighbours Matlock Town.

Town went ahead on 25 minutes when youngster German ran onto Wilkinson’s pass and finished past Chris Camm in the Aston net.

Charlie Wakefield got number two after good work by German and Curtis Morrison.

And Derek Daly put the Spireites in complete control, shooting through the lets of a defender for a 3-0 lead.

Two minutes before the break Dennis got on the scoresheet, flicking home Wakefield’s cross.

It was 5-0 two minutes after the restart, Dennis crossing for German who placed the ball past Camm.

Dennis turned goalscorer again on 50 minutes, turning the ball into the net after Sam Hird had headed down a corner.

Morrison’s pass led to a hat-trick for Dennis as double figures looked on the cards early in the second half.

It wasn’t all one-way traffic, Chris Beighton drawing a save from Lloyd Allinson in the home goal.

A minute from time German got on the end of a fine Martinez pass to complete his own hat-trick.
