Alfreton Town look to book Derbyshire Senior Cup semi-final place

Alfreton Town emerge from a ten-day period of playing inactivity on Tuesday evening when they take on Long Eaton United at the Impact Arena in the quarter finals of the Derbyshire Senior Cup.

The fixture should hopefully not be in doubt as the playing surface has had frost covers on since Saturday morning.

Despite the relative close proximity of the clubs, the cup tie is a first competitive meeting between the sides in almost 29 years, the last one being a Northern Counties East League fixture on March 14, 1987 which finished goalless at Long Eaton.

In the Derbyshire Senior Cup, it is even longer since the sides met, the last time being in the 1981/82 season when Alfreton won 1-0 at Grange Park in a first round tie. The Reds went on to win the competition by defeating Matlock Town over two legs in the final.

United became members of the newly-formed Midland Football League in the 2014-15 season and are currently sat seventh in the table.

Long Eaton go into tonight’s cup tie on the back of two home defeats, 4-2 against Brocton on Boxing Day and 4-1 against Bardon Hill which was their last outing on January 2.

In contrast, Reds manager Nicky Law will be looking for his side to extend their current unbeaten run to six games in all competitions and advance to the semi-finals of the competition.
