Alfreton Town announce link-up with Alzheimer’s Society

An innovative new group for people with dementia is coming to Derbyshire in September thanks to a partnership between the Alzheimer’s Society and Alfreton Town Football Club.

The Sporting Reminiscence group will see attendees discussing previous matches and sports people with the help of memorabilia such as football programmes and newspaper cuttings.

It will meet in the Sponsors Lounge of Alfreton Town Football Club and will initially focus on football.

Helen O’Connor, Alzheimer’s Society Services Manager for Derbyshire said: “It is really exciting to be working with Alfreton Town to try something we’ve never done before. We do reminiscence activities in a number of our local support groups, but focussing just on sport isn’t something we have tried before.

“Reminiscence work uses a person-centred approach . It is a way of tapping the long term memory of those who have short term memory problems. Something as simple as an old Match of the Day theme tune, a 1950s football programme, a football rattle or an old Derby Telegraph match report can bring back vivid memories from a happy time.

“The activity helps carers and loved ones to engage with people with dementia in a positive way, and has the potential to improve the quality of life for local people living with dementia.”

Alzheimer’s Society runs the Derbyshire Dementia Support Service funded by Derbyshire County Council and Derbyshire’s Clinical Commissioning Groups
