Flying Fielding sets his sights on F4 crown

Chesterfield driver Sennan Fielding has set his sights on the British Formula 4 title this season after remaining second place in the standings at the end of a three-race weekend at Rockingham.

Although he was only fifth on the grid after the first qualifying session, most importantly Fielding was ahead of the championship leader Max Fewtrell.

He then finished sixth at the end of the second qualifying session, and notably three places behind his rival, leaving him with plenty of work to do when the races got under way.

Despite the youngster’s efforts, Fielding faced an even bigger mountain to climb after after race one because Fewtrell shot past the Derbyshire man to take third, while Fielding could finish only fifth.

As the second race got going, the Chesterfield driver started fourth on the grid, with Fewtrell just behind him in sixth.

Knowing he needed to maximise his points’ haul, Fielding wasted no time in overhauling the cars in front of him and was soon in the lead where he would remain to take the race win, while Fewtrell settled for third.

In the weekend’s final contest, Fewtrell started in third, three places in front of Fielding, who was able to track his rival’s progress. Seeing Fewtrell snatch the lead, Fielding knew that unless he could catch and overtake him, it was going to be an exercise in damage limitation. So he reeled in the cars in front of him as he made progress up to second position.

Despite his best efforts, Fielding had to settle for second and, overall, he dropped two points to Fewtrell, who now leads the championship standings on 287 points to Fielding’s 263. However, it is still all to play for and still worth remembering that the Chesterfield racer boasts considerably more race victories during the course of this season.

With six races remaining, including three at Silverstone in just under three weeks’ time and the final battles at Brands Hatch over the weekend of October 1 and 2, Fielding is still raring to go in his quest for the title.

The F4 Championship features a mix of professional motor racing teams and privately funded drivers, all in cars that conform to the technical regulations. Fielding drives for the long-standing, Dronfield-based JHR Developments team, alongside fellow Brits Billy Monger and Jack Butel
