Last Saturday saw first ever round of the Cyclocross World Cup held in Britain at Milton Keynes with the world’s best riders competing.

A Junior Mens National Trophy support race was held ahead of the professional mens and women’s races in front of the growing crowd of thousands. Matlock CC rider Arthur Green had his best ride to date finishing 2nd behind American rider Gavin Haley and ahead of fellow Derbyshire rider and National Junior Champion Tom Craig in 3rd. Although having a great start, Green didn’t have an easy race crashing early on the first treacherous banked corner which saw many riders struggling to stay upright. However Green stuck to his task on the technical course and rode strongly through the field in front of him to a clear second place, 30 seconds back from Haley.

Later the large crowds were treated to cyclocross racing at its finest with Belgian national champion Sanne Cant taking the victory in the elite women’s race while Derbyshire rider Nikki Harris took third riding for her Telenet Fidea team. In the men’s race Belgian Kevin Pauwels secured the victory ahead of Klaus Vantornout.

Sunday saw the remaining national Trophy series races take place using the same course as the previous day. In the U14 girls race local girl Ellie Smith (Fossa Racing) continued her fine form this season taking the win which moved her to within 4 points of the overall series lead. Meanwhile in the over 50 Veterans race, Zepnat rider Tim Gould took 3rd place which moves him up to 3rd in the overall series with forthcoming races at Bradford and Derby to complete the series

This coming Sunday, attention turns to RAF Cranwell in Lincolnshire where local riders will be competing in the Midlands Area C
