The 25-year-old has been rewarded a new deal after successfully returning from injury which ruled him out for the entire 2014 season.

Since making his first team debut in 2007, Poynton has appeared in 33 first-class fixtures for Derbyshire, scoring 941 runs with a top score of 106 and claiming 87 dismissals behind the stumps.
The former England U19 international has also featured heavily in the one-day arena for the county, competing in 39 fixtures and hitting 224 runs.

Poynton returned to action during the club’s pre-season tour of Abu Dhabi and will be available for the start of the 2015 campaign.

Graeme Welch, elite performance director, said: “Tom has displayed exceptional character since the tragic events that ended his season last April.

“He has worked tirelessly both in training and in his off-the-field role to prepare him for his return and everyone at the Club is delighted to see him back on the field playing for Derbyshire.
“We hope the new contract will now give him the confidence to go out and express himself this summer. He has shown good form since his return to training and in Abu Dhabi and we hope this continues.”
