Alex Wakely has led Northamptonshire’s recovery on the second morning of the Division Two County Championship match against Derbyshire at Chesterfield.

The Northants skipper was unbeaten on 91 at lunch as his side fought back after Derbyshire reduced them to 118 for 5 with leg spinner Matt Critchley striking with his second ball.

Critchley had nightwatchman Nathan Buck well caught low down at mid off by Billy Godleman who then put down a much simpler chance before Richard Levi had scored.

Fortunately for Derbyshire, it did not prove costly as Levi was bowled by Hardus Viljoen for seven but Wakely, who passed 6,000 first-class runs, shared a sixth wicket stand of 93 with Steven Crook as Northants reached 211 for 5, 49 behind.
