Colin Ackermann and Mark Cosgrove scored half centuries to put Leicestershire into a strong position on the opening day of the Division Two County Championship match against Derbyshire at Derby.

The pair shared an unbroken stand of 113 for the third wicket to take Leicestershire to 214 for 2 from 64 overs at tea with Ackermann on 81 and Cosgrove, who scored 95 not out and 110 at Derby last season, 57.

They came together after Harry Dearden was out in the fifth over of the afternoon session, caught at gulley driving at Tom Taylor for 46 from 135 balls.

Taylor had Cosgrove dropped at second slip on eight and that proved expensive as the Leicestershire skipper and Ackermann took advantage of good batting conditions to beat through the next 23 overs.
