Confident Derbyshire Gems race to their second National League win

A combination of defensive intensity and quickfire offence proved too much for opponents Barrow Thorns as Derbyshire Gems raced to their second win in Division Two of the National Women's Basketball League.

After success in their opening league game against Mansfield Giants, Barrow proved much less of a threat as Gems triumphed 78-22 in their first home fixture at Queen’s Park Sports Centre.

They took control immediately, with captain Kate Loftus helping her way to 11 points in the first half, by the end of which they had built an unassailable 43-6 advantage. Gens had a vice-like grip, defensively, on Thorns, with Jade Clemenson sweeping the boards and Izzie Hannity scoring a pair of nice baskets.

As the game moved on, Helena Palmer became more influential, cutting through the tiring Thorns defence, to top score with 15 points. The third quarter ended 63-16 and Gems maintained their superiority in the final quarter too. Also high up on the scoresheet was Grace Brownell with nine points.

This Saturday, full of confidence, Gems travel to the Merseyside area to face Sefton Starlights, who challenged for the title last season but who were beaten 58-54 by Worcester Wolves in their opening match of the new campaign last weekend.
