Chesterfield tame Shrews with a super eight display

Chesterfield continued their rich vein of form with a clinical performance on Saturday, netting eight goals against Shrewsbury in an 8-1 win.

Adam Bointon was the star of the show as he ran in a hat-trick within the first ten minutes of the game.

Chesterfield started the game as the form team in the league and soon demonstrated why as Bointon was on hand to turn in a powerful Jon Moores flick.

Christian Battye then saw his shot well saved but Bointon reacted first to make it 2-0.

The home side sensed blood and were soon three goals up after Chris Cowley finished from an improbable angle to leave Shrewsbury rocking.

With just ten minutes gone, Bointon completed his hat-trick with a fine finish after Ben Lamb had bamboozled the visitors’ defence.

At 4-0 down Shrewsbury pulled a goal back after a penalty corner strike squeezed by Matt Lloyd.

This proved to an aberration, however, as the home side once again asserted their dominance on the game. Chris Cowley ghosted past the defence to feed Lamb, who shot first time to give his side an unassailable 5-1 half time lead.

Chesterfield stamped their authority on proceedings in the second period, running in three goals to ensure a miserable afternoon for the visitors from Shropshire.

Cowley bagged his second of the game as he turned in a Bointon cross and Tasos Varsamidis made it seven with an assured finish high into the net. The rout was completed when player-coach Ben Lamb shot low into the corner of the goal, as the match ended 8-1.

Ben Lamb reflected on another solid performance from his side.

He said: “The guys put in a fantastic shift today, we were excellent from the start and killed the game off in the first half. Young Jon Moores and Ben Curley were superb in the heart of our defence.”

Jonno Hodgson leaves for Australia this week.

Lamb added: “The contribution of Jonno can’t be understated either, he’s been excellent since he returned.

“He’s off to play in Tasmania again, which he does so with our blessing. It’s a shame to lose him but the lads are on a roll and were excellent.”
