Chesterfield beaten in ECB National Club Championship by Barnsley

A disappointing second loss over the weekend saw the effects of Chesterfield having no warm up matches because of the weather.

They were well off the pace in being defeated by an energetic Barnsley CC by seven wickets in the ECB National Club Championship in the Queen’s Park on Sunday.

The day started well with Mykylo Bird continuing the form he showed the previous day, by striking three fours in the first over.

After that the visiting opening bowlers, Beck Fostrick and Daniel Waldron produced impressive spells reducing the home side to 30/3 with each of the three dismissed batsman lasting just nine balls.

Captain Matt Higginbottom was the only player to offer support to Bird and their fourth wicket partnership of 47 was the highest of the innings.

Mykylo was unluckily run out for 63 with the score on 113/8. His 172 runs over the weekend accounted for 49 per cent of the runs scored by Chesterfield in the two matches.

Chesterfield were all out for 133 in 38.2 overs with Ali Jahangir having the best bowling figures for the visitors with 3-33.

The Chesterfield score always looked too small to defend and even though Matt Higginbottom bowled well to claim two wickets making the visitors 51/2 (the second being a terrific diving catch by Bird behind the stumps) they only claimed one further wicket.

The Barnsley captain, Jonathan Trower opened the innings and was not out for 77 from 77 balls when Barnsley won the match by seven wickets in the 25th over.

The disappointment of the two losses over the weekend was offset by the performance of wicket keeper/batsman Mykylo Bird.

This is a young cricketer who has consistently worked hard on his game and deserves great credit for his early season form.
