Massey shrugs off early cut to claim victory on professional debut

High Peak boxer Jack Massey celebrated his maiden bout as a professional with a stoppage win in Bolton last weekend.

Twenty-year-old cruiserweight Massey impressed against journeyman Jody Meikle at the Reebok Stadium and put his opponent down twice before the fight was stopped in the third.

In what was a harsh introduction to the paid ranks, Massey received a cut near to the eye in the first round.

However, his corner patched him up and the debutant went on to knock Meikle down twice before sealing victory in the third round.

Dad David Massey said: “It was fantastic to watch Jack on his debut.

People were commenting saying how well he did and even Brian Rose (British light-middleweight champion) who was watching on, said he was impressed.”

Massey is now resting away from the gym until next week.

He is scheduled to make his second appearance later this year, with the Reebok Stadium again the likely destination on October 12.
