Jade helps England to success over Scotland

Chesterfield's Jade Ashmore has led England to boxing glory over Scotland.

The teenager was England team captain for a 10-bout contest that saw England triumph six bouts to four.

Jade, who is studying to become a fitness instructor at Bradford College, captained the team of three female and seven male fighters who travelled to Glasgow for the contest at Boxing Scotland’s High Performance Centre.

The 18-year-old, led by example by delivering a unanimous victory over Scotland’s Lyndsey Robinson in the 51kg category.

And for the 2020 Olympic hopeful, it was a pleasing performance.

“I felt like it was the best I had ever boxed,” she said.

“I was comfortable to switch from orthodox to southpaw through the bout.

“I just controlled the bout from the first to the last bell. It was fantastic to finish the year off on a high with a win and I am proud to represent my country once again.”

Jade’s success comes hot on the heels of that of fellow Bradford College student Harris Akbar who last month brought home the bronze medal – and England’s only medal – from the AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships in Russia. Harris, 17, is also aiming to make the Great Britain squad for the next Olympics, in Tokyo.

Both use the college’s top-notch boxing facilities at the Trinity Green campus and work with the college’s boxing trainer Mally McIver, who is part of the England Boxing coaching team.
