Bointon treble as Chesterfield HC fight back

Captain Chris Battye said there were positives to be had from his Chesterfield Hockey Club's second half showing at Finchfield.

Chesterfield’s winning run in Midlands Division Two came to an end on Sunday after an enthralling game at their third-placed opponents.

A disappointing first half for the visitors saw them trail 4-0 at the break. Adam Bointon responded with a second half hat-trick for Chesterfield but they would go on to lose 5-3.

And Battye said: “We made some silly mistakes in the first half against a very good side and were punished for it. You can’t give quality players that much space and expect not to concede goals.

“We rolled our sleeves up and were fantastic in the second half though. Adam (Bointon) was unplayable today and a hat-trick was the least he deserved. I honestly thought that after we got to 4-3 we’d go on and win it.

“With a little bit more luck it could have been a better outcome but we can certainly be happy with the second half today. We caused them problems and never gave up.”

The second half saw a very different Chesterfield emerge and they were quick to put the home side on the back foot.

Time and again the Derbyshire side opened up the Finchfield defence but were lacking the finish.

The visitors finally got their reward when Bointon was first to react after Jon Moores saw his shot saved - but Bointon was there to lift the ball over the ‘keeper to pull a goal back.

A second followed after Battye picked out Bointon in the circle and his ice cool finish set up a frantic final 15 minutes. After causing problems for the home side all afternoon, Bointon completed his hat-trick via a deflected strike to bring Chesterfield within a hairs breadth of levelling the scores.

With the scores finely poised at 4-3 player-coach Ben Lamb was presented with a glorious chance to make it 4-4, but his effort crashed against the post to give the hosts a reprieve.

With time running out, and with tempers becoming increasingly frayed, Finchfield scored late on to secure all three points with Chesterfield reduced to ten men after Jonathan Hodgson was sent off for a professional foul.

Chesterfield host second-placed Warwick University on Saturday.
