Mary Langen, 15, of Chesterfield, was one of only a handful of students to pass her black belt exam with the Karate Union of Great Britain (KUGB) on Saturday, September 3.

The event was held at the Barnsley Sports Academy.

Sensei Sherry, chief instructor of the KUGB has invited Mary, a pupil of St Mary’s RC school, Newbold, to go to the trials for the junior national squad in January 2012.

Mary, also a county standard tennis player, has been practising shotokan karate for three-and-a-half years and trains at the Chesterfield shotokan karate club under the instruction of sensei Phillip Gandy, a 5th Dan and one of the KUGB’s most senior instructors.

This year, Chesterfield SKC is celebrating it’s 40th year.

Mary is the youngest person in the club’s 40 year history to gain her black belt.
