Beeson double sinks Town

Worksop Town 2, Matlock Town 0

Lee Beeson struck both goals to easily beat a lethargic Matlock who looked as if the end of the season could not come quickly enough.

Matlock went down to table topping Chester seven days earlier with honour and their pride intact but at Sandy Lane they went down with scarcely a whimper.

Their miserable set of results on their travels continued and they never looked remotely like achieving just their third away win of the season and their first for over six months.

Worksop went into the game out of form themselves.

The Tigers had lost their previous five home games and they must have been surprised at the ease with which they saw off a Gladiators side who failed to test rookie goalkeeper Sean Cuff all afternoon.

Worksop named former Gladiator Jamie Jackson in attack and he was upended by Kris Bowler inside the first five seconds!

A lack of concentration on 18 minutes led to Worksop taking the lead when Jackson got in behind Yates and went down under Yates’ tackle to earn a penalty. Yates was booked and Beeson kept cool to slot a controlled finish into the bottom corner.

Matlock’s day was summed up aptly with a sloppy second goal conceded in the 57th minute.

Kennedy, on his first return to the Windsor Foods Stadium following his move from Worksop in the summer, picked up a back pass. The Gladiators’ wall disintegrated as Beeson’s shot found the net.

It was a performance to forget as far as Matlock were concerned with few players emerging with credit.
