Arrows see off rivals in Patrons Cup encounter

Derbyshire Arrows got their Patrons Cup campaign off to a winning start with a thrilling home victory over rivals Doncaster Eagles by 88-79.

It was a match of fluctuating fortunes and proved a real roller coaster of emotions for the crowd at Dronfield Sports Centre.

The Arrows ripped into the Eagles from the start scoring 32 points in the first quarter despite the loss of talisman Joseph Baugh to an elbow to the face.

The Eagles struggled in all areas and were relieved to hear the buzzer to end the first quarter. The Arrows Denis Scott and Aaron Moseley both hit a pair of ‘three pointers’ as they personally contributed 12 and eight points respectively as the Arrows led 32-16.

However, multiple personnel changes by the Arrows saw the momentum lost completely and Doncaster did more than establish a foothold in the game taking the quarter 20-9 cutting the Arrows overall lead to 41-38 at the interval.

At the start of the third quarter the Arrows returned to the personnel and tempo of game that had proved so successful in the opening quarter.

Once again, this time with James Kelly and Joseph Baugh prominent, the Arrows moved clear again. James Kelly had eight points in the third before giving way to Luke Parker. Sadly once again the Arrows were careless as a group and by the end of the quarter had whittled away their own lead to 67-61.

The game was now in the balance as the Arrows crowd however a nice pair of baskets from Matt Wilson and some fine defence from Paul Heymann saw the Arrows home 88-79. Aaron Moseley played a good game and confirmed his quality with 19 points.

Arrows are back in action on October 1 in Nottingham with the winner advancing to the semi-final.

Scorers: Baugh 19, Moseley 19, Scott 14, Kelly 10, Wilson 9, Lycoudis 9, Broodie 3, Heymann 3, Parker 2.
