Allen and Kenway are on top in Matlock CC’s hill climbs

The riders first tackled the notorious Riber course, starting from Starkholmes School before climbing up the horrendously steep zig-zag bends all the way up to Riber.

Local Buzz Cycles rider Adam Kenway took the win in 3:39.5, ten seconds shy of the course record despite a strong headwind. Second place went to Buxton Cycling Club’s Lee Baldwin whilst third went to in-form James Allen of Langsett Race Team.

The fastest Matlock rider was youngster Arthur Green in 4:10.05. His father Chris was the second fastest Matlock rider and John Johnston the third.

The afternoon saw the riders take on the shorter Bank Road from Crown Square in Matlock.

Not as tough as Riber, but still very hard with gradients approaching 20 per cent in places, this time riders were helped by the wind rather than hindered.

This time tthe win went to James Allen, recording an impressive 1:52.06 to beat Lee Baldwin by just over two seconds. Matt Clinton was third whilst Riber winner Kenway was fourth.

Once again Arthur Green was the quickest of the Matlock Cycling Club riders, with John Johnston the second and Chris Green the third.

Round seven of this year’s Notts and Derby Cyclo Cross League took place on Saturday at the Bingham Leisure Centre course in Nottingham.

The event was organised and promoted by Velo Club Nottingham, and once again there were huge numbers taking to the start lines in the various age categories.

Matlock Cycling Club’s Amelie Wayte had the ride of the season so far as she was in dominant form in the U12s race.

Not only was Wayte the fastest girl, she beat all the boys too to take the overall win in what was a very exciting race. Wayte’s teammate Sarah Briggs finished in ninth place overall and in second spot in the girls’ competition by some distance.

In the U9s race, Matlock Cycling Club rider Harriet Limb was fastest in the girls’ race, whilst teammate Holly Hoy joined her on the podium in second position.

Louis Swindell’s good form continued as he finished fourth overall in the U9s race, while Will Gascoyne was second in the U16s youth race. Cameron Orr put in yet another solid display as he finished in seventh overall.

In the U14s race, Matlock’s John Webster finished third in the boys event, whilst club mate Ellie Smith was second in the girls’ race.

It wasn’t just the youngsters doing well for Matlock Cycling Club. Christine Howard looked very strong as she powered to victory in the female veteran category, whilst Maz Heffron finished a solid third.

Chris Green was second in the Veteran Over 45s class, finishing close behind the winner Jonathan Marshall of Zepnat Race Team.

Terry Taylor was third overall in the Veteran Over 65s category.

Arthur Green was yet again the comfortable winner in the junior category.

Green has been in great form of late and was well up in the main field of the seniors race, eventually finishing in seventh place overall.
