A police spokesman said: “The drunk burgling driver had a bad temper and was not happy at being caught so he tried fighting us.”

Earlier in the evening, an Audi TT was stopped near Junction 34 of the M1 as it was found to have cloned registration plates with assistance from South Yorkshire Police.

A third car was also stopped on the M1 as its MOT had expired in July and it was uninsured.

The police spokesman said: “At least the walk to the services to arrange a lift home was short.”
