We have never experienced aggression from Derbyshire's Highland cattle

After moving to Chesterfield in 1996, I joined the local group of the Ramblers’ Association, and on many occasions, we walked through fields and across moorland, including the Baslow area, encountering herds of Highland cattle. We never encountered any aggression, even when taking dogs along (kept on a short leash and walking at a safe distance). Highland cattle, with or without calves, are naturally placid animals. Even bearing that in mind, we have at times taken detours. After all, the time calves are with their mothers is not too long and there are plenty of other paths for walkers, with or without dogs, in the meantime.

One thing that was not clear to me from the article: where was the dog at the time of the incident? Was he on or off a lead? Barking furiously or running about?

I would be very sad indeed if Mr and Mrs Birch of Baslow needed to lose their cattle or were forced to move them.
