I WAS interested to read that the Pomegranate archives contains a copy of the poster for Buffalo Bill’s Circus’s visit to Chesterfield (‘Hotshot show on its way to town’, Derbyshire Times, May 26) as my grandfather was present.
He lived at Wingerworth Hall after his widowed mother remarried Mr Hadfield, the farmer and butcher, and it was there that the show was held.
He was impressed that in order to make the showground larger the members of the circus tethered horses to the fence posts that separated two fields.
They then whipped them up together so that they pulled out the whole line of fence in one go.
He always believed that Annie Oakley used shot in her gun as he could not believe that anyone could be so accurate shooting a single bullet.
When the circus left, Buffalo Bill gave a copy of his biography to my grandmother, which we still have.
