Plans for Chesterfield’s donut car park will create chaos and drive shoppers away

Chesterfield Borough Council announced recently that more new building works will begin in March, taking a year to complete and transforming the existing donut car park in Chesterfield town centre into an IT business park development.

We wonder if the decision makers at the borough council have thought this through with any degree of common sense, as our town centre appears to be transformed into a mass building development creating chaos and total inconvenience to drivers through our town centre. Firstly, surely the council would be better proving itself capable of attracting traders to lease all existing empty shops and make effective plans to increase market trade, prior to taking on multiple new costly projects?

Our town centre fails both local business and public in our opinion.

Secondly, the route into town via Saltergate is closed due to the building of the new multi-storey car park, meaning long detours past the town hall, West Bars, taking us on to Markham Road.

To begin a new major building development in the town centre before the multi-storey car park is completed is a reckless decision in our view as it will add to existing chaos on the roads.

The council, far from attracting people into our town centre, will in fact be driving them away in our opinion.

Anyone coming into the town centre after March will need to add plenty of extra time for the journey with all the diversions, as well as make sure they have plenty of petrol while they queue for long periods on busy roads.

Residents living near the town centre may feel the impact more than most, we wonder what the council is planning to soften the blow for local trade and residents, if anything?
