Do we want local government devolution in Chesterfield? If so, is it with South Yorkshire, Derbyshire/Nottinghamshire or some other grouping?
Prosperity shouldn’t be down to a postcode lottery, with winners and losers. Devolution of powers requires an Act of Parliament giving equality of treatment to all regions. If local government reform is needed we need to build on the 1972 Act, which was the last big re-organisation.
Currently there is even some talk of the North Midlands joining with Staffordshire and Shropshire to re-create the old kingdom of Mercia.
The sight of local councils falling over themselves dancing to Osborne’s tune to grab supposed investment 30 years down the line is incredible.
Devolution...yes, but not a dog’s dinner formed in local town halls throughout the land.
