Just speak plainly!

THE statement by the Chesterfield Borough Council regeneration chief about a planned new shopping area (Derbyshire Times, July 21, 2011) was a verbal treasure. In only a few lines it managed to include the following: ‘high quality public realm; increase the retail offer; create an anchor; increase pedestrian footfall; attract operators’. The county council, ‘down the road’ have also proved themselves to be no slouches in the gobbledegook stakes - they now describe their policy of charging people for services that were previously provided free as a ‘fairer contributions policy’. Please, please just speak English and describe things as they actually are.
