Jarrow marchers are coming through town

News of Chesterfield’s award for regeneration schemes is welcome – but we need a large pinch of salt before believing the new jobs claims.

Markham Vale, where over 2,000 mining jobs were axed, was intended to create 5,000 jobs. Three years later, there are only a couple of hundred.

British big business is refusing to invest, banks won’t lend to small businesses.

Meanwhile, workers, their families and young people trying to get a job are struggling.

Seventy-five years after unemployed workers marched from Jarrow to London, Youth Fight for Jobs is following their footsteps (www.jarrowmarch11.com).

Among their demands is a massive government scheme of socially useful jobs and apprenticeships with guaranteed jobs at the end.

The marchers arrive here on Thursday, October 13. Support them in Eckington 11.15am, Whittington Moor 1.30pm and New Square 2.30pm. On Friday 14, they leave from the Job Centre at 9am, passing Markham Vale before arriving in Bolsover at 11am and Shirebrook at 12.15pm.
