From here to Scotland

As someone born and brought up in the Chesterfield area but now working in Aberdeen’s North Sea oil industry, I was interested to read the Times Comment The Vote You Might Miss.

Whilst DT readers will be aware that only Scottish residents get a vote in the forthcoming independence referendum, its outcome clearly has massive implications for the whole of the UK. It’s worth knowing, for example, that over 80% of the UK’s offshore reserves could be attributable to a newly-independent Scotland.

From the Postbag, it’s fascinating to read how NE Derbyshire still recognises its own vast energy potential. Having witnessed first-hand the prosperity and high rates of employment that oil has brought to Aberdeen, I’m looking forward to the day when this region reaps the benefits of its own oil, shale gas and (once again) coal reserves.
