Young Derbyshire man died after '˜losing control' of motorbike he bought day before

A young man sadly died after losing control of his motorcycle which he had only bought the day before, an inquest heard.

Cameron Higgon, 19, of Main Road, Morton, lost control of his Honda motorcycle while negotiating a bend and slid into a car travelling on the opposite side of the road.

The collision happened on Pilsley Road, Morton, on November 18 last year. He was airlifted to hospital but died two days later.

Assistant coroner for Derbyshire, Kathryn Hayes, said: “It is a shame that such a young man who seems to have had everything going for him - a job, his first motorbike - and it is cruelly cut short in such a sad way.”

The inquest at Chesterfield Coroner’s Court on Tuesday heard that Mr Higgon, a welder, had bought the Honda motorcycle the day before the fatal collision after passing his test a few days earlier.

Mr Higgon, who was born in Chesterfield, was on his way home from a friend’s house on the morning of November 18, with his brother Connor riding slightly behind him on a scooter.

Mr Higgon had been travelling at 50mph - below the 60mph speed limit - and had been wearing appropriate headgear.

Sadly, as he was negotiating a corner, he lost control and collided with a Ford Focus travelling on the opposite side of the road just after 10am.

He was airlifted to Northern General Hospital in Sheffield but died as a result of severe skull and brain injuries.

The driver of the Ford Focus - a woman called Dawn Graham - had been driving at around 40mph with her two young boys as passengers.

The court heard that Mrs Graham did everything she could to get out of the way of Mr Higgon.

“She had virtually no time to react,” a statement by PC Gary Wilson, of Derbyshire police, said.

In her summary Ms Hayes said there was no suggestion that Mr Higgon had been riding ‘aggressively’.

“He simply made a misjudgment,” she added.

Ms Hayes recorded Mr Higgon’s cause of death as road traffic collision.
