The internet is awash with claims that next week’s rare astronomical event will signal the start of the apocalypse – but boffins at NASA say our planet is safe.

At 2am on Monday, September 28, the Moon will be unusually close to the Earth and look bigger and brighter than usual – it will be a Supermoon.

Within an hour, the Earth will cross between the Sun and the Moon in a total lunar eclipse.

Then, at about 4.30am, the Moon will be fully visible again – and it should have a red glow from the Earth’s shadow.

It will be the first time in 30 years that there will be a Supermoon and a total lunar eclipse on the same night.

Some online conspiracy theorists claim passages in the Bible suggest the phenomenon will trigger the apocalypse.

However, a NASA spokesman said: “There is no existing evidence that an asteroid or any other celestial object is on a trajectory that will impact Earth.”
