A SCHEME that helps local residents with long-term health conditions or disabilities who want to start their own businesses has been extended for a further three years.

Bolsover District and Chesterfield Borough councils have secured investment of a further £424,000 into the Work for Yourself programme which has been in operation in the area since June 2009 and has helped seventy-six people back into work and establish their own business.

The programme, which is funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and investment from the two councils, is delivered by Disability Dynamics and aims to help local people back into work and stimulate the economy. Everyone who takes part in the scheme has their own Business Adviser who offers help and advice throughout the programme.

Bolsover District Council’s Leader, Councillor Eion Watts said, “This is a fantastic scheme and one that we had no hesitation in extending. We often hear of people who have great business ideas or are stuck on benefits because of their health problems, well this scheme gives them the lift they need to put their ideas into reality and start working again.

“The advice and help Disability Dynamics give to people is second to none and we would encourage people to come forward and talk to them – and who knows this time next year you could be running your own business.”

Councillor John Burrows, Leader of Chesterfield Borough Council said: “Work for Yourself has delivered really excellent results for Chesterfield residents. The project has produced sound, sustainable, well planned businesses with many innovative ideas coming to fruition.”

Penny Melville-Brown who leads the delivery team said, “We are all hugely pleased to be able to continue supporting local people. Our Business Advisers have received lots of praise and they are eager to get started with new clients. Self-employment is easier than you think when you have help at every stage.”
