Wirksworth open gardens event hailed a blooming success

An open gardens event in Wirksworth attracted more than 1,100 visitors and raised over £5,000 for local groups and charities.

The ninth Hidden Courtyards and Gardens of Wirksworth Trail featured 29 gardens, with visitors being treated to refreshments and live entertainment.

Peter Riddle, on behalf of the Hidden Gardens group, said: “Despite the fact there is competition from surrounding villages and towns, Wirksworth remains a firm favourite with many visitors returning year after year.

"Visitors were impressed with the friendliness of Wirksworth people, the diversity of the gardens and the excellent organisation over the weekend.”

Recipients of the raised funds will include Wirksworth Scouts to assist with renovation work, Waltham House to help towards a piano for the resident’s lounge, the skate park for much-needed improvements, the locating of a Memorial Stone in the Memorial Gardens, and to two local young musicians to contribute their costs of touring abroad.
