Wirksworth mayor is the youngest in Britain

Wirksworth is believed to have the youngest mayor in Britain after the prestigious chains and robes were passed on this week.

Ben Dew, 22, was sworn in at a ceremony in Wirksworth Town Hall on May 28.

He takes over from the former mayor Mike Ratcliffe, who wished Ben luck in the post but added his reassurances that he would “serve the town proud”.

Ben is now believed to be the youngest currently serving mayor in the country.

Ben said: “It feels great to be mayor and I am honoured to have been given this opportunity.

“I’m sure it will take a little while to settle into the role but I’ve got loads of ideas and I’m keen to get working.”

The former Anthony Gell student has been deputy mayor on the town council for the last year and, while not sure if he would like to continue a career in politics, is “leaving his options open” and is keen to build on his experience.

Ben, who works as a project and events assistant for Derby company Baby People as well as a nationwide theatre technician, is keen that the hype surrounding his take over does not overshadow the work he plans to do in the town.

“I really want to engage with all aspects of the community, but especially younger residents,” said Ben.
