WHITWELL: WI’s campaign to recruit more members

Whitwell and District WI meet every second Monday in the month at 7pm in the Community Centre on the Square in Whitwell, where members listen to speakers and socialise.

May is the branch’s decision making month when members have to decide how to vote on the resolutions for the coming year. Unusually this year there is only one resolution, ‘The WI notes with concern the decline of our high streets and town centres’. This prompted both a lively debate and also a trip down memory lane as people remembered just how busy our local high streets and town centres used to be. The branch’s vote was logged with its delegate to the annual conference to be held in Cardiff next month.

On a lighter note, members enjoyed strawberries, shortbread and cream as they puzzled over a short quiz.

At the June meeting the speaker will be David Darby and his topic is ‘Kindly leave the stage’.

The branch is holding a coffee morning on Saturday, May 25, from 9.30am till 11am in the Community Centre.

A recruitment campaign for new members will see posters and flyers around Whitwell. For further information, call Viv Rhodes on 01909 723437.
