Derbyshire set to be blasted by gales as wind and rain warning is issued

Strong and gusty winds are expected across northeast England and parts of south east Scotland during Friday with gusts of 55-65 mph, and perhaps to 70 mph in a few places.

Further rain is expected across northern England on Friday. Rain will turn persistent and occasionally heavy over parts of the Pennines before clearing early on Saturday. 20-30 mm is likely to fall widely over higher ground with the potential for 50-70 mm in a few places. Given the recent wet conditions this brings a risk of flooding.

The yellow warning has been updated to include southern cross-Pennine routes in Derbyshire and South Yorkshire.

Some delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport are likely as are delays for high-sided vehicles on exposed routes and bridges.

Flooding of a few homes and businesses is likely, bus and train services probably affected with journey times taking longer.

Spray and flooding on roads will probably make journey times longer and some interruption to power supplies and other services is likely.

It will be a cloudy day on Friday with heavy and persistent rain across western parts with a risk of localised flooding. Largely dry across more eastern areas. Very windy and gusty, particularly towards the north and east. Maximum temperature 10 °C.

Tonight persistent rain will ease overnight, with clear spells and showers developing, possibly wintry on hills. Staying windy and frost-free. Minimum temperature 6 °C.
