Warning against utility bill scams

Derbyshire police is urging the public to remain vigilant in a bid to prevent victims of a utility bill scam this winter.

A report released by the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau shows how there is an emerging trend from overseas cold callers fraudulently offering discounted energy bills to UK consumers.

When making a payment over the phone, residents are asked not to share their bank details to the caller and always call the person back to make sure that the telephone number and the company are genuine. They are also advised to be vigilant when dealing with sellers from abroad or private individuals and to ask the caller for the telephone number or address of the company.
