VIDEO: Wirksworth’s future mayor set to be youngest in the UK

The next Wirksworth mayor is to become the youngest in the UK when he takes over the chains and robes next month.

It is believed that when 22-year-old Ben Dew, of Wirksworth, takes over from current mayor Mike Ratcliffe in May, he will be the youngest, currently serving, mayor in the entire country.

Ben, who works as a project and events assistant for Derby company Baby People as well as a nationwide theatre technician, said: “It’s an honour to have been asked to be mayor. My family are so proud too.”

But the future mayor is keen that the hype surrounding the take over does not overshadow the ideas he has for the town.

“My main aim is to engage with the younger people in Wirksworth,” said Ben.

“Let them know what opportunities and funding are available to them as well as arranging more activities and workshops for people.”

The former Anthony Gell student has been deputy mayor on the town council for the last year and, while not sure if he would like to continue a career in politics, is “leaving his options open” and is keen to build on his experience.

Ben, who is also a Labour Party member, said: “It is a great opportunity and I’m really excited to take over.”
