Breathtaking stunts, magnificent shires and a thrilling scurry championship: and that was just the centre ring at Thursday’s Bakewell Show.

Thousands flocked to the third and final day of the town’s 183rd agricultural show at the showground, enjoying beautiful sunny weather and a jam-packed programme.

From sheep shearing and vegetable entertainers, to the parrot roadshow and the pigeon competition, there was something for everyone at Derbyshire’s most popular event.

Teamed with the traditional dog show, pony classes and cattle judging, families enjoyed the perfect day out.

Revellers were treated to the usual stalls of mouth-watering hog roasts, tempting tarts and delectable delis, as they perused the ‘magic’ must-have gadgets on sale.

While budding gardeners were wowed by the horticulture tents of colossal cauliflowers, beautiful bouquets and superb scarecrows.

Kids built sandcastles on a pop up beach, car lovers viewed vintage vehicles and music fans tapped their feet to the Bakewell Silver Band.

High Peak entrants did the region proud with one Tideswell gardener’s flowers winning four categories.

Denis Allerton, 71, whose plants have won prizes at Bakewell for seven years on the trot, said: “I’m very pleased but it’s a shame there’s not more competitors. In some categories, no one else had entered! But the judges said they didn’t have to award me a first prize.”

He added he had been gardening for seven years because it was “more relaxing than golf”.

Meanwhile Buxton farmers were also well represented, with Sarah Flagg winning a rosette foe her horned and polled pedrigree zwartble sheep.

Tom and Jack Bellfield , of Lower Boothlow Farm, Sheen, also won two awards for their flock of pedrigree beltex sheep.

Linda Robbins, a spokesman for the show, said: “I haven’t spoken to anyone, be it customers, stallholders or exhibitants, who hasn’t enjoyed themselves. Many agreed it’s been the best Bakewell Show yet!”
