VIDEO & PICTURES: Fruity fun at the core of Cromford Apple Day

Hundreds flocked to the annual celebration - organised by community group Celebrating Cromford - for an afternoon of free family fun on Scarthin promenade.

Visitors took along their bags of harvested or windfall apples and watched as they were pressed into juice to take home, while the discarded pulp was reused as animal feed or compost.

David Mitchell, one of the event organisers, estimated around half a tonne of apples were processed at the event.

“We had three presses working on the day, which we certainly needed to keep up with the amount of apples,” he said.

Entertainment was provided in the form of live music and Morris dancing.

There were stalls representing local charities and associations, and a range of fun games and competitions, including the search for the longest peel.

David added: “The event always puts a smile on people’s faces, and it’s rapidly becoming more of a country fair than simply a day of apple pressing.

“Every year we think it is the best ever, and this year is no exception.

“We welcomed hundreds of visitors, with some travelling from as far as Nottingham, Sheffield and Derby.”
