VIDEO: Lightning strike blasts hole in Chesterfield road

A lightning strike overnight appears to have blown a big hole in a Chesterfield road.

Highways workers have this afternoon fenced off the crater on St Augustine’s Road.

Spectacular displays of lightning, rumbles of thunder and heavy downpours rocked Derbyshire for about an hour from 2.30am – waking hundreds of residents up.

The dramatic weather followed above-average temperatures yesterday.

East Midlands Ambulance Service said its paramedics dealt with 22 road crashes between midnight and 8am.

Flooding and debris were reported on some roads across the county following the storm.

It will feel very warm today with temperatures reaching 26C.
