VIDEO: Dales MP presents new car to Downs Syndrome sufferer

Patrick McLoughlin, Secretary of State for Transport and MP for Derbyshire Dales, today presented a new Motability car to constituent Michael Shimwell.

The presentation took place at Matlock Ford, Causeway Lane, Matlock.

Michael, 49, has Downs Syndrome, and has difficulty in getting around due to both his physical and intellectual impairments. He has been on the Motability Scheme for eight years.

Michael’s mother, Pat, said: “It’s always a special day when we go to collect our Motability car, but today has been made even more special.

“The Motability car makes such a difference, not only to Michael, but to the whole family. I used to drive a 15 year old unreliable and expensive car. One day a letter arrived telling me that Michael might be able to get a Motability car so we went to Matlock Ford to have a look at what was available. Michael has to attend a lot of medical appointments so having a reliable car is essential when you live out of town.”

She continued: “Michael’s Motability car enables us to get out and live life. We can just get in the car and go without thinking about how we’ll get there and back. In the summer we go for drives in Chatsworth Park and watch the deer, or just go out for a drive around in the evening. On a day to day level, I know that I don’t need to worry about how I’m going to do the shopping, get Michael’s medication or take him to the Doctors – Michael’s Motability car takes all of that away.”

Patrick McLoughlin MP said: “I am delighted to have the opportunity to present Michael with the key to his new car. It is really impressive to see how Motability has grown over its 35 years and I believe it’s important to recognise the difference the Scheme makes to the lives of people like Michael.”

The Rt Hon The Lord Sterling of Plaistow GCVO CBE, Chairman of Motability, commented: “We are very pleased that Patrick McLoughlin was able to join us all here today with Michael, his family, friends and local dignitaries. For all of our 35 years, Motability has enjoyed support from across the political spectrum. The Scheme continues to go from strength to strength and, even in times of change, we will continue to ensure we provide people like Michael and his family with the freedom to travel independently.”
