VIDEO: Cause of Clay Cross bus blaze unclear

Firefighters were called to the drama on High Street in Clay Cross just before 4.30pm on Monday as temperatures topped almost 25C.

No passengers were on board the bus – which belonged to Clay Cross-based DW Coaches – and the driver escaped unharmed.

It is not yet clear what caused the fire.

Donna Unwin, who works at CMC Motorcycles on High Street, alerted the fire service. She also filmed the above video.

She said: “I saw a lot of smoke coming out of the back of the bus and then it caught fire.

“It’s certainly been the talk of the area.”

Dan Feltham and Troy Flynn, who also work at CMC Motorcycles, attempted to battle the blaze using fire extinguishers.

Another eyewitness, who did not want to be named, said: “I heard shouting for people to stay back as I went down the road and armed police who were passing through had already stopped.

“A few minutes later a fire engine from Clay Cross arrived and set about putting out the flames.

“Chesterfield firefighters came moments later and assisted.

“The county council visited the scene about an hour later to check the road then police reopened it.”

A spokesman for Derbyshire fire service said: “Crews from Clay Cross and Chesterfield attended the incident at 4.25pm.

“It involved a double-decker bus which was well alight.

“Firefighters used hose reel jets to tackle the blaze and left the scene at 5.35pm.

“Thankfully, nobody was injured.”
