VIDEO: Bingham re-elected as High Peak MP with increased majority

Mr Bingham, who has been MP for the last five years, polled 22,836 votes, 4,894 ahead of Labour’s Caitlin Bisknell. UKIP candidate Ian Guiver polled 5,811 votes with Stephen Worrall (Lib Dem) gaining 2,389 and Charlotte Farrell (Green Party) polling 1,811.

Speaking after the result was announced, Mr Bingham said: “I’m delighted to be re-elected. It’s been a long campaign but it’s been a good campaign.

“I’m absolutely delighted the people of the High Peak have put their faith in me once again.

“There are quite a few issues which need attention like the bypass in Glossop which is a big issue, the rail franchise, also the Healthier Together consultation with Greater Manchester hospitals which also affects the High Peak.

“I’d like to thank everybody for voting. People have supported me today and for the last five years. I regard it as the ultimate privilege and I’m delighted to be able to carry on.”

Caitlin Bisknell said: “I’m very disappointed. We fought a really fair, strong and positive campaign in contrast to the Tories campaign which was wholly negative.

“I think there is a lot of support out there for Labour and personally I don’t think that it is enough to just say I’m a local guy who votes independently.

“Six thousand more people are going to be hit by the bedroom tax including older people who have been shielded from it. There will be cuts to services. We know there are 60 per cent further cuts to come. I think we’re entering a very difficult phase.”
