UPDATE: Travellers '˜still there' at Chesterfield car park

Travellers who have set up camp on a Chesterfield car park are '˜still there' according to council officials.

The group, which arrived yesterday along with 12 caravans, are currently on the private Britannia car park on Hardwick Place near the Holywell Cross roundabout.

A spokesman for Chesterfield Borough Council said the site had today been inspected by their environmental health team who had found it to be ‘tidy’.

He also said rubbish bags had been given out to the group but that the travellers were not forthcoming on how long they would remain there.

The council official reiterated that the authority had no power to remove the travellers as the car park was privately owned.

A spokesman for the company which runs the car park, Britannia, said: “This is an ongoing situation being dealt with and we are working with the police and the council on this matter.”
