An elderly man who was hit by a car on Sheffield Road is in a critical condition in hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The incident took place on Tuesday at around 1pm, when the man is believed to have crossed the road near Peveril Island when a car, an Audi TT, came around the roundabout before hitting him in the road.
Police are yet to confirm the condition of the pedestrian, and it is believed the driver of the Audi TT is unhurt.
Police and air ambulance were in attendance after the road traffic collision on the busy road where witnesses described ‘distressing scenes’ as the area was filled with emergency services and traffic drew to a halt.
Eyewitness Michelle Scoffings, from Chesterfield, said: “The man was put in an induced coma and airlifted to hospital. I really pray this man pulls through.”
Sharon Grafton told on Facebook: “It was awful I was right where the air ambulance landed. It was such a small area to land. Those air ambulance people are real heroes.”
Derbyshire police confirmed the details of the incident: “An officer on patrol came across the crash at 1.05pm this afternoon.
“The incident near the Peveril island involved one Audi TT. “A pedestrian, believed to be elderly, suffered a head injury and was taken by air ambulance to Northern General Hospital in Sheffield.”
And hearts continue to go out to the man and his family over social media.
