“I look forward to seeing the role this new addition to the Royal Family will play in our public life in the years to come.”

Kate’s last public appearance was at the Trooping the Colour ceremony on June 15 and she had been staying with her parents in Bucklebury, Berkshire, before she was admitted to the same hospital where Princess Diana had Princes William and Harry.

The couple first met at university and were married in April 2011. Kate, 31, had a difficult start to her pregnancy after spending three days in hospital for acute morning sickness.

Prince William, 31, took leave from his role as an RAF air sea rescue pilot at Anglesey to be beside his wife’s side before the birth.
