Chesterfield magistrates’ court heard on Thursday, December 10, how Lynda Smith and Adam Wass, both from Pinxton, twice stole make-up from Boots in Alfreton.

Magistrates spared them from custody by imposing suspended prison sentences but warned that any repeat offending could see them activate the custodial sentences as well as dealing with them for any new offences.

The probation service explained that Wass had committed the thefts to gain financially so he could purchase illicit drugs similarly to his co-defendant Smith.

The court heard how Wass is using heroin and crack cocaine on a daily basis and at the time of the thefts was without any income after missing a Job Centre appointment.

Wass, 39, of Woodfield Road, Pinxton, and Smith, 35, of Church Street East, Pinxton, both pleaded guilty to the thefts which were committed in October.

Magistrates, who highlighted that Wass and Smith have a long history of committing thefts, sentenced Smith to six weeks of custody suspended for 12 months with an 18 day Rehabilitation Activity Requirement and a Drug Rehabilitation Requirement for six months. She was ordered to pay £74 compensation and a £150 courts charge as well.
