The M1 in Derbyshire is expected to be one of Britain’s busiest routes over the Easter weekend.

According to travel information company Trafficmaster, delays between junctions 23a and 32 – which includes the Derbyshire stretch – are set to be the among the worst in the country.

Roadworks to transform junctions 28 and 31 into a ‘smart motorway’ with an extra running lane have been put on hold by the Highways Agency over Easter – but the temporary speed limit of 50mph will remain in place.

Nationally, the RAC estimates that four million people will be travelling on Good Friday and around 4.5 million will be on the road on Easter Sunday.

Breakdown company Green Flag said 54,000 call-outs were expected over the weekend, with one puncture every minute.

Green Flag also said that Britain’s least-congested roads over the Easter weekend would include the the A57 Snake Pass in the Peak District and the A537 Cat and Fiddle between Buxton and Macclesfield.
