M1 closed ‘for a long time’ near Chesterfield and Mansfield after lorry crash

Drivers are facing long queues on the M1 southbound following a collision this morning that police have warned could take ‘a long time’ to clear up.

Emergency services were called around 8.30 this morning (January 22) after a lorry crashed into a broken down Peugeot 207 underneath the bridge at J29 on the southbound side of the motorway near Chesterfield and Mansfield.

The driver of the broken-down car was not in the vehicle at the time, and no injuries have been reported.

Police are attending the scene and the vehicles are being recovered.

There is heavy traffic on the motorway on all southbound lanes as a result.

A spokesperson for Derbyshire Police said that the recovery operation was expected to take ‘a long time’ due to the size of the lorry, and that the lane would be closed for the duration.

Drivers are advised to avoid the area while it is ongoing.
