CYCLING fans are invited to watch a fantastic 41.8 mile road race in the Peak District with riders from across the region.
The TLI High Peak Road Race, organised by Sharrow, Whirlow and Norton Wheelers cycling clubs, starts from 10am, on Sunday, July 1, at Chelmorton Institute, on Main Street, at Chelmorton, Taddington, and involves over five laps with a finish near Hubber Dale.
Co-organiser Paul Sleaford, of Norton Wheelers, said: “This is a fantastic race in a wonderful setting which makes it a very exciting prospect for both riders and spectators.”
The Montura sponsored race takes in Chelmorton, Flagg and Monyash with three handicapped groups separated primarily by age differences.
There will also be over £500 of prizes available including the Lyn Collins Memorial Award for the first woman rider.
A full field of 80 riders is again expected to come from all over Yorkshire, Humberside, North Notts, North Lincs, Stafford, Macclesfield, Manchester and Liverpool and more locally from Matlock and Buxton.
Riders will be handicapped into three groups based on age and ability. They will compete for a total prize list of £500. The first female rider will receive the Lynn Collins Award in memory of the wife of one of the event organisers who died last autumn.
Co-organiser, John Collins said: “The race is a repeat of those held in the previous two years which were the first for almost a decade.
“Because they have been hailed as great successes this year’s race will be in a bigger better format thanks to sponsorship from Montura Bikes, makers of precision bike frames.
“It will not only provide extra competition for the riders but also a free and fast moving spectacle for the spectators and local residents. The very tough undulating course will ensure that the first rider over the line will be a very worthy winner.”
