Time to spot the Red Planet

Stargazers in Derbyshire will have the best chance to see Mars for 11 years tonight as it makes its closest approach since 2005.

At 9.35pm, the red planet will be 75 million kilometres away in what is known as opposition.

Despite the proximity, the view of Mars may not be great. From the UK, it will be low on the south-eastern horizon - Australia and New Zealand are the best places to see it - and can be found near the bright red star Antares and the yellow-tinged Saturn, which will form a jewel-like triangle.

A telescope will be needed to see more than just a bright spot in the sky.

At its furthest, the Red Planet can be up to 250 million miles away from Earth.
