TIBSHELF: Community School pupils on World of Work for Learning Programme

Students at Tibshelf Community School with tutor, Clare Gaunt and assessor, Marie Lye, are taking part in the World Of Work for Learning Programme.

In The World Of Work learners are working towards a Diploma with Aim Awards and are using the Step-Up Suite of qualifications; comprising of a large number of units at both Entry Level 3 and Level 1.

The flexible and responsive qualifications cover broad and diverse areas and have been devised with the aim of progressing learners into further learning and/or employment. The vast range of units available means teaching staff can create individualised learning programmes for different groups. Mandatory units are: Core skills, which focus on employability, personal and social development and functional skills, this is combined with vocational pptional units like tiling, gardening, car maintenance and fitness through the carousel programme.

The carousel programme provides opportunities for learners to develop their skills in literacy, numeracy, ICT, employability, personal development and to test out their abilities and personal preferences before selecting a chosen career or employment route.

Each time a learner gains a pass in a unit, they gain an award with credits attached which builds up to 15 credits and a certificate. To complete the award and full diploma they must attain 37 credits.

If learners do not gain the full diploma by the end of Year 11 they can take the credits gained and carry on working towards the full diploma at college.
